Tony Griffin visited Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine on Thursday, September 19th, to speak with our 5th and 6th-year students. From the moment he began speaking until his final words, his talk was truly inspirational. He captivated the students with his personal journey, sharing the highs and lows of his life in a way that deeply resonated with them. Despite addressing over 120 5th-year students and around 80 6th-year students in separate sessions, Tony was completely at ease, and the students were fully engaged, hanging on to his every word.
His message was simple yet powerful: everyone experiences ups and downs, everyone faces struggles, and everyone cries at times. Through a simple "step into the line, step out of the line" exercise, Tony demonstrated to the students just how alike they all are. It was a poignant reminder that everyone has challenges to face in life, and no one is alone in that.
In my 24 years as Principal, I’ve heard many talks, but this one was truly special. Tony connected with the students in a remarkable way, and I’ve heard from many parents that it was a topic of discussion at the dinner table that night. His straightforward message got students thinking, helping them realize that life is a journey filled with both joy and excitement, alongside inevitable challenges. As a school, it was wonderful to see our students take an hour to relax and reflect.
I wish I had recorded the talk because it was truly exceptional. Talks like this can’t be replicated online – they need to be experienced in person. It was captivating, and the message is one that every teenager should hear. Even as a Principal, far from my teenage years, I found myself learning from Tony’s words.
Well done, Tony! I encourage you to bring this talk to many more schools, as your message is one that students truly need to hear, and your ability to connect is a rare gift.
